Wisconsin has Highest Rate of Adult Alcohol Use

The state of Wisconsin has a problem on its hands. According to the Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter, Wisconsin's rate of adult alcohol use, adult heavy alcohol use and adult binge drinking are the highest in the U.S. The statistics regarding its teens' drinking habits fall close behind.

Wisconsin Drunk-Driving Statistics

Wisconsin's rate of drinking by high school students was the country's 11th highest in 2009; as for binge drinking by students, the state ranked the eighth highest in 2008, according to the Herald Times Reporter. A 2011 survey of Manitowoc County high-school students also paints a bleak picture: 68 percent of students reported drinking alcohol, while 20 percent reported binge drinking.

With such high rates of alcohol use, it is no surprise that Wisconsin drivers face a heightened risk of alcohol-related auto accidents. According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, alcohol remains the single greatest cause of fatal crashes on state roadways. In fact, the number of alcohol-related crashes in Wisconsin has increased slightly over the past five years, according to the DOT.

Distracted Driving

Of course, other factors are also to blame for motor-vehicle accidents on Wisconsin roads, such as distracted driving, especially as more drivers own electronic devices like smart phones. In response to the dangers of distracted driving, Wisconsin enacted a law that prohibits drivers from being "so engaged or occupied as to interfere with the safe driving" of their vehicles. The law also specifically bans texting with a cellphone while driving.

Drivers who have suffered injuries in a motor-vehicle accident and family members of those involved in fatal auto accidents may be able to obtain compensation for the harm caused by the accident. These individuals should contact a knowledgeable personal injury attorney to discuss any legal claims they may have.
